Gerard Wagemaker

Gerard Wagemaker (1948), PhD, is Professor of Hematology at the Chair of Stem Cell Gene Therapy of Erasmus University Medical Center, Rotterdam, The Netherlands, from 2007-2008 Visiting Professor at the Dept. of Molecular Cell Biology, Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel.

He was trained in medicine, radiation and transplantation biology. From 1974-1992 he was a staff scientist at the Radiobiological Institute TNO, Rijswijk, The Netherlands, last functions held Head of its Department of Experimental Hematology and Head of the Department of Radiation Biology of Erasmus University’s Medical School.

From the latter capacity he served in the ‘90s the Dutch government as well as the European Commission, the World Health Organization and the International Atomic Energy Agency in analyzing the health consequences of the Chernobyl accident. He has made significant scientific contributions to the areas of radiation biology, bone marrow and stem cell transplantation, hematopoietic cytokines, and gene therapy with over 180 publications, with a focus on stem cell regulation by hematopoietic cytokines and currently on stem cell gene therapy development. With a long-standing record of coordinating European projects, as of 2002 he coordinates the European Commission’s translational research projects on stem cell gene therapy for inherited diseases (www.gene-therapy.eu) and holds numerous international advisory functions in radiation protection and cell and gene therapy.
